The L.D. Bell 2001 Jazz Showcase was presented on Thursday, February 1st. The program featured the Bell High School Jazz Band as well as the University of Texas at Arlington Jazz Orchestra. Under the direction of Mr. Jeremy Earnhart, the Bell Jazz Band performed a blend of lively jazz tunes from composers and arrangers including Count Basie, William Russo, Thad Jones, Mark Taylor, and Sammy Nestico. The repertoire spanned music from the Count Basie Band, the Stan Kenton Orchestra and the Thad Jones/Mell Lewis libraries. Highlights included outstanding solos from several of the band's talented membership and the vocal stylings of Bell Senior, Sara Klopfenstine, on I'm Beginning to See the Light. Be sure to check out the pictures from this event. Jazz Band is a scheduled class this year at Bell. It meets fifth period during the second Trimester and this year consists of twenty-two members. Following Bell's Jazz Band was the UTA Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Bill Snodgrass. Their performance was stellar. The UTA Jazz Orchestra is the premier performing ensemble of the UTA Jazz Studies program, and is credited with numerous LP recordings, performing with such nationally known jazz artists as Dizzy Gillespie & Ed Shaughnessy, and has appeared in a wide variety of both national and international concerts. The music performed was high energy and highlighted Dr. Mike Bogle, performing one of his original compositions. There will be more opportunities this year for you to hear the Bell Jazz Band. The group will be competing in the UTA Jazz Festival on March 3rd as well as the TCU Festival on March 31st (times TBA). Also, the band has been invited to perform at the Twilight Thursdays Masterworks Series at the Bedford Boys Ranch on April 19th from 7-7:30. |
